Megadex Optical Coatings

Megadex coatings were originally formulated by the Megerle company of Germany. ADDEV Materials has acquired the technology for the manufacture of these coatings.

The coatings are designed for the permanent or temporary protection of optical glass and mirrors. The product range now comprises of the three coatings E2200, E2064, E3668. The products are based on physically drying resins which are hard but not brittle meaning that coated glass can be cut without damaging the coating.

The products can be used for the permanent protection of mirrors, prevention of corrosion to the reverse of the coated mirror and protection of the edges. They may also be used as a process coating in the manufacture of optical glass, particularly for the fixing in place of high refractive index optical lenses during the polishing process. The coatings are resistant to fluids used in the polishing and bevelling processes. The coating permits adhesion of process adhesives, adheres well to high RI glass and can be removed using highly polar solvents, especially in ultrasonic cleaning baths.

E2200 is a light grey coating which can be applied by brush or spray to a dry film thickness of 30 microns. This product is the closest alternative to the former product F5413 which contained lead.

E2064 is a light grey coating with a modified resin composition to promote adhesion to high refractive index optical glass, it can be applied by brush or spray to a dry film thickness of 30 microns.

E3668 is a black counterpart to E2064 which offers a different colour when required, such as at the edges of lenses where a black colour is useful (this is not a special optical black but does have a dark colour convenient in optical applications). It can be applied by brush or spray to a dry film thickness of 30 microns.

The coatings may be used in combination, for example E2064 basecoat plus an overcoat of E2200.
